Face of the Future: Students Explore Forensic Science in STEAM World!
Our STEAM World students at The Opportunity League became the next generation of crime-solvers in our Forensic Science Series. Focused on Forensic Science, this hands-on program immersed youth in a thrilling world where science meets investigation.
Through the STEAM World series, students dove into activities that brought forensic concepts to life—from fingerprinting and handwriting analysis to crime scene creation and biometric evidence discovery. They didn’t just learn about forensic science—they became detectives themselves to explore exciting careers!
How many students can say they:
- Lifted their own fingerprints using pencil lead and tape
- Analyzed handwriting samples to uncover hidden clues about personality
- Identified unknown substances using texture, smell, and reactions with water
- Processed mock crime scenes and presented their own detective cases
- Participated in a thrilling escape room challenge to test their teamwork and logic
- Interviewed a real DEA Agent, gaining insight into real-world law enforcement careers
OURS CAN!
💡 What They Learned:
Students explored forensic terms like DNA, trace evidence, and toxicology. They learned how biometric evidence—like fingerprints and facial recognition—is used to solve crimes, and how real investigations differ from what’s shown on popular crime shows. They even broke down forensic salaries and imagined future careers.
🎤 Finale Night Highlights:
Families were invited to a showcase night featuring hands-on exhibits and a dynamic guest panel including forensic scientists, police officers, attorneys, and even a K-9 unit. Students presented their crime scenes using the terms and techniques they learned throughout the series.
📦 Giving Back:
As part of their community service, students also prepared books and care packages for individuals reentering society after incarceration—proving that being a forensic scientist also means being a responsible, caring citizen.
